Islamic Weekend School PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 November 2010 19:33

The weekend school was re-established in the Spring of 1996 after taking a one year hiatus upon conception of the full-time Islamic school. The purpose was to inculcate Islamic knowledge and values to the children of our community, especially to the kids who were unable to attend the full time school due to the limited grades in the first year. After a while, the direction of the weekend school also included acting as a feeder program towards the full-time school. Over the last couple of year, the weekend school has added a special teenager program as well as an adult program.

The weekend school started with two teachers and less than thirty students in 1996 and in 2006-2007 the school averaged 130 students and 15 faculties including administrators, permanent teachers, assistant teachers, backup teachers, guest speakers, and imams, in addition to unlimited parents helpers, Jazahum Allah khair.

Presently the school is operating on ten classes, four levels of children Islamic knowledge, four levels of children Qura'n reading and memorization, and two separate teenage classes for boys and girls on Islamic knowledge and activities. The school is held at the Islamic Center of Nashville. Every Sunday, classes begin at 10:30 AM and end at 1:00 PM with Salat ul-Dhuhr.

Currently IWS is searching for two sisters to teach the beginners class (ages 5-8). To qualify, sisters who volunteer for this class are expected to:

  • Be committed and reliable to show up every school day.
  • Be very patient and enjoy being with little ones.
  • Have good Arabic/Qur’an pronunciation skills.

Because of the growing number of students, volunteers are needed for all classes to assist teachers with large number of students. From experience we see that the smaller the number of students per teacher, the more one on one attention is available, and the greater the benefit to our young Muslims.
